The Scandinavian Society of Western Pennsylvania
The Society's purpose is to advance Scandinavian culture in America and to provide means to maintain and enjoy Scandinavian customs and traditions.
Activities - The Society's program includes:
* Regular meetings with an emphasis on Scandinavian culture and society
* Midsummer Celebration
* Nordic Night October party organized for all local Scandinavians
* Christmas Party
* Crayfish party/Society picnic
* Participation in the Pittsburgh Folk Festival
* Sponsorship and arrangement of events of visiting groups of dancers, singers, artists and athletes from the Scandinavian countries
* Periodically providing a scholarship for summer study in Scandinavia
Meetings
If you or any of your friends are interested in participating and supporting our activities, we invite you to attend our meetings to learn more about the Society and meet its members. Meetings are usually held in the 3rd weekend of the month. You may call 412-661-7942 for more information about time, place and program.
Affiliations
The Scandinavian Society is affiliated with the Nationality Rooms Program at the University of Pittsburgh and uses the Universities facilities for its regular meetings.
The Society maintains ties with the Scandinavian Folk Dancers of Pittsburgh, a group devoted to the practice and performing of folk dances of the Scandinavian countries. This group meets weekly for practice and enjoyment of an evening of Scandinavian folklore.
Membership and Dues
Society membership is open to anyone interested in the purpose and activities of the Society. Membership entitles the member to attend all meetings and activities, have voting right privileges, be eligible to hold office and receive the monthly newsletter "The Runes".
